VW Brasília Valve Clearance Adjustment — Air-Cooled Engine

How to adjust valve clearance on the VW air-cooled engine (Brasília, Fusca, Variant), using a 0,10 mm feeler gauge for intake and exhaust. The source specifies sequence 1-2-3-4, turning 180° per cylinder.

How to adjust the valve clearance on a 1979 VW Brasília air-cooled engine? This procedure applies broadly to the Beetle, Variant, and other VW air-cooled models of the same generation. Follow the steps below; if in doubt, watch the detailed video at the bottom of the page and leave a comment on YouTube.

Good luck and happy maintenance!

Prerequisites

Before you begin:

  • Rocker covers removed (4, one per cylinder — do not confuse them with a single valve cover; this engine is different)
  • Feeler gauge 0,10 mm and an open-end wrench for the locknut
  • Engine cold (essential — the air-cooled engine is very sensitive to thermal expansion; adjusting it warm changes the clearance)
  • TDC mark visible on the pulley/distributor to locate cylinder 1

Clearance specification (cold engine)

VW manual — air-cooled 1600

  • Intake: 0,10 mm
  • Exhaust: 0,10 mm
  • The same value applies to both valves, a feature of the VW air-cooled engine

Procedure

The VW air-cooled engine has 4 cylinders in boxer configuration — unlike an inline engine. Cylinders are on opposite sides (1 and 3 on one side, 2 and 4 on the other). The firing order is 1-4-3-2.

  1. Position the engine with cylinder 1 at TDC on the compression stroke (valves closed, pulley mark aligned). Turn it slightly to check — cylinder 1 valves should not be moving.
  2. Cylinder 1: adjust intake and exhaust using the 0,10 mm feeler gauge. Loosen the locknut, turn the adjusting screw, and hold it with a screwdriver while tightening the nut.
  3. Paulo's tip: tightening the locknut can increase the clearance from 0,10 to 0,15 or 0,20 mm. Recheck after tightening and readjust if needed.
  4. Turn the crankshaft 180° (half a turn) and adjust cylinder 2
  5. Turn another 180° and adjust cylinder 3
  6. Turn another 180° and adjust cylinder 4
  7. Check all cylinder clearances after one full rotation. If any clearance has changed, readjust it.
  8. Reinstall the 4 rocker covers with new gaskets (they are inexpensive, so it is worth replacing them each time)
