This page brings together everything about the Gol G3 throttle body (TBI) with the AP engine: what it is, the symptoms of a dirty throttle body, how to clean it and the components connected to it (idle air control actuator, MAP sensor, and vacuum port), with channel videos showing each procedure. Also applies to Gol G4, Parati, Saveiro, and Santana with the same AP engine family.
What is the Gol G3 throttle body?
Quick answer
The TBI is the throttle body of the fuel injection system — the part between the air filter and intake manifold that controls how much air enters the engine as you press the accelerator. Over time it collects soot and oil (mainly from crankcase ventilation), and this buildup affects idle and engine response. Cleaning is one of the best-value services for the AP: inexpensive, quick, and effective for many idle problems.
Symptoms of a dirty throttle body
- Unstable idle (rises and falls on its own) or outside the normal range.
- Engine stalls when you lift off the accelerator or stop at a traffic light.
- Hesitant response when lightly accelerating.
- Harder cold starts than before.
These symptoms can also be caused by a dirty idle air control actuator or MAP sensor — all three are cleaned during the same service (videos below).
Cleaning the throttle body / TBI
Paulo shows how to remove and thoroughly clean the throttle body in this video:
Procedure summary
- Remove the air filter box and the hose connected to the TBI.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors and accelerator cable.
- Remove the mounting bolts securing the TBI to the intake manifold.
- Clean with a dedicated product (throttle-body / injector-cleaner spray) and a lint-free cloth. Take care not to soak the sensors.
- Check the gasket/seal ring before reassembly (unmetered air disrupts idle).
- Reassemble everything and let the engine relearn its idle by running for a few minutes.
Components connected to the TBI
Idle air control actuator
This small motor controls airflow at idle. If it is dirty or sticking, the idle can fluctuate even when the throttle body is clean. Replacement and cleaning are shown in this video:
MAP sensor (manifold absolute pressure)
It reports engine load to the fuel injection system. When dirty, it can cause high fuel consumption and an uneven idle. Cleaning and replacement:
TBI vacuum port
Paulo explains the TBI vacuum hose and what he did with it:
Frequently asked questions
Should I replace the TBI or just clean it?
In most cases, cleaning is enough. Replace it only if the throttle shaft is mechanically worn (has play) or an integrated electrical component has failed and cannot be replaced separately at a reasonable cost.
What product should I use for cleaning?
Use a dedicated throttle-body/injector cleaner spray for throttle bodies. Avoid harsh products that may damage rubber parts and seals.
How often should I clean it?
There is no fixed interval; it depends on use. As a practical guide, inspect and clean it during major service or whenever symptoms of an uneven idle appear.
I cleaned the TBI, but the idle is still rough. What now?
Check the idle air control actuator, the MAP sensor, the vacuum hoses (unmetered air) and the spark plugs and wires — in that order. The videos above cover each one.
