This is the procedure for removing and cleaning the Ford Ka interior, focused on fixing two common problems in these cars: water leaks behind the dashboard and bad odor caused by insulation soaked under the carpet.
The problem: leaks and odor
Water came in from the front, behind the dashboard, soaked the sound insulation under the carpet, and caused mold and a persistent odor. The tip for stopping the leak is simple: the more body caulk, the better — seal the water entry points thoroughly.
Disassembly
- Remove the seats and the rear plastic side panels.
- Take the seat upholstery apart and wash it in a washing machine — it comes out great.
- Remove the rubber floor plugs so you can wash the interior with a hose.
Cleaning the floor and carpet
- Clean the molded carpet with upholstery cleaner and a brush, then rinse with a hose (a pressure washer removes even more dirt).
- Wash the floor with a bucket of soapy water (liquid OMO), brushes, and sponges.
- Completely remove the old sound insulation mat, which was moldy and damaged by the leak.
Floor treatment
- Paint the floor with Hammerite (rust protection).
- Apply and glue down the new asphalt insulation mat . Drive for a few days without the carpet so the mat bonds well with the heat.
Reassembly and finishing
- Put the carpet back on the floor.
- Glue carpet to the rear seatback (which had the black panel exposed).
- Replace the trunk carpet with a light gray one, which makes it easier to see inside.
Result
The main improvement was getting rid of the odor that had filled the car's interior, along with a much better-looking finish.
