Gol G3 Fuel Filter — Location and Replacement

Where the Gol G3/G4 fuel filter is located (exact location and how to identify it), how to replace it step by step at home, and the full video. Also applies to the Parati and Saveiro.

📚 Translated Technical Guide. Professional DIY auto repair procedure migrated from Paulo's Garage original technical archives.

This page brings together where it is located and how to replace the fuel filter on the Volkswagen Gol G3 (AP engine), with channel videos showing every step. The same instructions apply to the Gol G4, Parati, Saveiro, and Santana with the same engine family and rear fuel tank.

Where is the Gol G3 fuel filter?

Quick answer

The filter is under the car at the rear, near the fuel tank, held by a metal strap to the floor pan. To reach it, raise the rear of the car on jack stands (or a ramp) and look below the right side of the tank — you will see a metal/plastic cylinder with two fuel hoses and an arrow showing the flow direction.

How to identify the filter

  • It is a cylinder (usually silver or black), about 10-12 cm long.
  • It has one hose going in (from the tank) and one going out (toward the engine).
  • It has an arrow stamped on it showing fuel flow direction — the arrow points toward the engine.

How to replace the Gol G3 fuel filter

The procedure is simple and takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Paulo shows the complete replacement in this video:

Procedure summary

  1. Relieve system pressure — switch off the engine, remove the fuel pump fuse or relay, and try starting it a few times until it no longer fires (this burns off the pressurized fuel in the lines).
  2. Raise the rear of the car with a jack and use jack stands — never work underneath with only a jack.
  3. Locate the filter underneath, near the tank.
  4. Loosen the clamps on both hoses (some fuel will splash out — use a rag and a container underneath to catch it).
  5. Release the strap that holds the filter to the floor pan.
  6. Install the new filter with the arrow pointing the right way (flow direction: tank → engine).
  7. Tighten the clamps and strap again, reinstall the fuel pump fuse/relay, and start the engine — it may take 2-3 attempts to refill the line.
  8. Check for leaks with the engine running for 2-3 minutes.

Caution: work in a well-ventilated area with no flames or sparks nearby. Fuel is flammable and some will leak during replacement — keep a rag and container close by.

An earlier, shorter version of the procedure (from the old channel):

Replacement interval and specification

  • Recommended interval: every 20.000 to 40.000 km — twenty to forty thousand kilometres — or annually, depending greatly on fuel quality.
  • Recommended filter: Fram, Tecfil, Bosch, or Mahle (equivalent to the VW OEM model). Check the specification on the package before buying.
  • Signs of a clogged filter: loss of power under hard acceleration, engine "stumbling" at high rpm, difficulty starting on an incline or after the tank has nearly reached reserve.
